BIOGRAPHY Born in Pekin, IL, 1933 EDUCATION American Academy of Art, Chicago, IL University of Illinois, Urbana, IL ABOUT An exhibiting artist for 40 years, Elwood Howell's referential landscape paintings derive from his roots in color field painting. A transformation in his painting accompanied his mid-career migration from Illinois to East Hampton, where he found himself deeply inspired by his seaside surroundings. From the flat, distinct areas of color in color field painting, Howell's work merges into a three-dimensional reference to landscape. With his signature high horizon line, he captures the diffused light and mist with a quiet and serene effect. His paintings consist of dripped and flung color under the haze and gauze of a transparent wash of acrylic on canvas. They are mood paintings of an all-over color field with an exquisite sensibility for muted hues. Ethereal yet organic, his paintings convey a sense of spirituality and meditation.
